It was originally in white colour,as it was the favorite colour of the emperor Shah Jahan. Construction of the fort began in the sacred month of muharram on 13 May 1638 and it was completed on 6 April 1648. It was the main residence of the emperors of the Mughal Empire for nearly 200 years, until 1856. The design of the fort is credited to architect Ustad ahmad lahauri,who was also architect of the taj mahal. Qila-I-Mubarak is the real name of the fort given by the mughals. The fort was build by Shah Jahan as he shifted the capital of his empire from Agra to Delhi. Every year on India's independence day (15 August) prime minister of India gives speech to the nation from the lal qila (native name of the red fort).
